Passive with ‘It’ and ‘There’

  • Usage: Used in everyday speech or reporting to share general opinions, rumours, or claims without blaming a specific person.
  • Structure: It/There + passive verb + that – clause/to – infinitive

Hedging & Softening

  • Usage: Used to sound polite, diplomatic, or cautious by intentionally making a statement less direct or aggressive.
  • Structure: Subject + softening verb + base verb/infinitive

 

Examples

1. It is commonly assumed that tech start-ups fail within their first year.
2. Your proposal would seem to overlook a few budget constraints.
3. I am minded to take a look at the data again before making a final choice.
