Present Perfect vs past Simple

  • Present perfect is used to connect the past and the present together. Common time expressions are since, for, already, just, yet.
  • Past simple is used to talk about a specific moment in the past. Common time expressions are using last + time, ago, for.

If I were you vs ought to

  • If I were you = used for hypothetical advice
  • Ought to = used to give obligatory advice

Writing emails

Include:

  • A formal, polite greeting such as Dear or To whom it may concern,
  • Reasons for writing – I am writing to …
  • Give reasons or examples
  • Use paragraphs to organise writing
  • A formal ending, such as Sincerely or Kind regards,

Examples

1. He has just read the newspaper.
2. She finished the meeting early.
3. You ought to see a doctor soon.
