Hopes and Regrets

Wish/If Only

  • To talk about things you want to be different in the past or present.
  • Present wishes = Wish/If only + past simple/past continuous
  • Past regrets = Wish/If only + past perfect
  • Ability/possibility = Wish/If only + could

Gerunds or Infinitives

  • Depending on the verb, add -ing (gerund) or to + infinitive

Writing essays

Include:

  • Introduction
  • 2 main paragraphs
  • Conclusion
  • Formal style

Examples

1. I wish I could stay at home today.
2. If only she had completed her university degree.
3. He denied stealing the money.
