Using To and For in English

We can use to and for to talk about purpose and why we do something.

To and for use different structures.

In this lesson, you’ll learn these different structures and practise using them.

How to use to and for?

To

Used to say why we do something
Used to say what something is used for
To + infinitive verb

For

Used to say why we do something – For + noun
Used to say what something is used for – For + noun or For + verb-ing

Examples

1. I go to work to earn money.

2. Hats and scarves are for keeping people warm.

3. I need to go to the shop for lunch.
