Comparative Structures

Double Comparatives

  • The + comparative + subject + verb, the + comparative + subject + verb
  • The earlier we leave, the sooner we’ll arrive.
  • The more luxurius the hotel, the higher the price.

Big/Small differences

  • Big differences – significantly, considerably, far, much
  • Small differences – slightly, a little, not much

Negative Inversion

Used to emphasise the first part of the sentence.

Invert the subject and auxiliary verb, if no auxiliary verb add do/does/did.

  • E.g. Never have I seen such a terrible accident.
  • E.g. Rarely do the government care about our well-being.

Writing an essay review

Include:

  • Introduction – introduce topic and what you’re talking about.
  • Main body – main paragraphs explaining and giving reasons for the topic. Back up with evidence.
  • Conclusion – a summary of your point and any suggestions to make.

Examples

Seldom have we been to such a beautiful place.
She is a lot less experienced than her colleague.
This is by far the most terrifying thing I've ever done.
