Defining and Non-defining Relative Clauses

Defining

  • The information is essential to the sentence
  • Who – people, which/that – things, whose – belonging to someone, where – place, when – time

Non-defining

  • The information is additional, separated by a comma

Modals of Deduction

  • Must = something is certain
  • Can’t = certainty is impossible
  • Might = something is possible

Writing book/film reviews

Include:

  • Name of book/film
  • What it’s about/plot
  • About the main characters
  • Your opinion
  • Would you recommend?

That is the man who is always in the library.
They met up at the café, where they originally met.
