Have you ever interacted with a customer service bot or seen a CGI character that was almost human, but something about it just made your skin crawl? That’s the ‘Uncanny Valley.’ It’s that psychological dip where a non-human entity looks nearly identical to a person, but the tiny imperfections – the lack of micro-expressions or the dead eyes – trigger a profound sense of revulsion.
As we hurtle towards a future dominated by generative AI, we’re seeing this play out in our creative industries. We’re being flooded with content that is technically perfect but emotionally hollow. It’s like eating a meal that looks like a Michelin-starred dish but tastes of nothing. We’re hardwired to seek out the ghost in the machine – that spark of genuine human fallibility and soul. Without it, technology is just a mirror reflecting our own data back at us. I suspect the more perfect AI becomes, the more we will crave the messy, unpolished, and quintessentially human glitches that make art actually worth consuming.
