Have you noticed how the humblebrag has basically become the primary currency of our digital interactions? It’s that exquisite art of complaining about something while simultaneously making sure everyone knows how successful or lucky you are. You know the type: ‘Ugh, I’m absolutely exhausted from flying business class to the Maldives; the legroom was almost too much.’ It’s fascinating because it stems from a desperate need for validation masked by a thin veil of modesty.

The problem is, we’ve become so attuned to it that it actually has the opposite effect. Instead of admiring the person, we find ourselves experiencing a sort of second-hand embarrassment. It’s a social tightrope. We want to share our wins, but we’re terrified of being perceived as boastful, so we wrap the boast in a relatable moan. But in the real world of social dynamics, authenticity is the only thing that actually scales. If you’re winning, just own it. The faux-modesty is frankly more grating than the arrogance itself.
