Prepositions of Place and Movement

There are many prepositions to talk about where things or people are.

In this lesson, you’ll learn these prepositions and practise using them.

What are the prepositions?

Prepositions tell us where something is and go before nouns in a sentence.

  • Under/below – lower than something – under the table
  • Above – higher than something – above the house
  • Behind – at the back of something – behind the tv
  • In front of – forward of something – in front of the house
  • Next to – alongside something – next to the shop
  • Between – in the middle of two things – between the post office and flats
  • Near/close to – close to something – near the supermarket
  • Opposite – across from something – opposite the cinema
  • Among – in the middle of a group – among the crowd

Examples

The bus stop is in front of my house.
The cinema is opposite the butchers.
I found my phone behind the sofa.
Remember: each preposition has a specific use.
