Possessives in English

We use ‘s to show possession (something belongs to someone).

We use different forms depending on singular and plural nouns.

In this lesson, you’ll learn these forms and practise using them.

When to use possessives?

Possessives are used to show an object or someone belongs to someone.
For singular nouns – add ‘s – My mum’s car is blue.
For plural nouns ending in ‘s’ – add ‘ – The students’ books are ready.
For plural nouns not ending in ‘s’ – add ‘s – The children’s toys are on the next aisle.
For names ending in ‘s’ – add ‘ or ‘s – Thomas’ job is exciting.

My parents' house is in the countryside.

Her brother's bike is green.

Men's clothing is on the first floor.

Don’t forget to add ‘s when speaking and writing.

Write the correct form of the noun in brackets using the possessive.
