Other/The Other/Another
These determiners are used to talk about additional or alternative items.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use each determiner and practise using them.
How to use each determiner?
Other
- Used for alternative items.
- Used with plural nouns or uncountable nouns.
- E.g. Other information is available on our website.
Others
- Used for alternative items.
- Used as a pronoun. Replace ‘other + plural noun’.
- E.g. Some people stayed, others left.
The Other
- Used when you have 2 options and you talk about the second option.
- Used with singular nouns.
- E.g. This bag is full, but the other bag is empty.
The Others
- Used as a pronoun.
- Used to talk about the rest of a group.
- E.g. Some people like it, others hate it.
Another
- Used to talk about additional items.
- Used with singular countable nouns or as a pronoun.
- E.g. Can we have another, please?
Examples
There is another pen on the desk.
The other children are playing in the playground.
Other people are talking in the kitchen.
