To talk about objects and things that exist/are present
There is = singular nouns
There are = plural nouns

Prepositions of place

Next to = immediately to one side of something
Opposite = on the other side
Between = in the middle of 2 things

Examples

1. There is a house next to the park.

2. There are cars parked opposite the shops.

3. My friend is sat next to me.
