Sentence Structure

There are 3 types of sentence structures; simple, compound and complex.

These structures help build and express your ideas and thoughts in an organised way.

In this lesson, you’ll learn these sentence types and practise using them.

What are the 3 sentence types?

Simple sentences

Express one thought or idea

Compound sentences

Join 2 independent clauses/ideas together
Use a conjunction such as; for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so

Complex sentences

Joins independent and dependent clauses together
Use a conjunction such as; if, since, as, while, after, when, although, because, until, before

Examples

1. I went to the park.

2. I went to the park and it started to rain.

3. I went to the park because it was sunny.

Identify the sentence types.

Common mistakes learners make

Confusing dependent clauses with complete sentences.
Overusing simple sentences.
Overusing ‘and’. Use a variety of conjunctions.
