Subjunctive Mood (Formal)

  • Used to express wishes, suggestions or hypothetical situations
  • Verb ‘to be’ in the past subjunctive – use ‘were’ for all subjects
  • Present subjunctive – use base form of the verb – drop the -s for third person singular
  • Negative subjunctive – use ‘not’ before the verb

Cleft Sentences

  • Used to split a sentence to emphasise a specific part
  • Structures – It is/was …., What ….
  • E.g. It was me who finished the project. What we need is more time.

Write a proposal

  • Include a formal greeting
  • State the what and the purpose of the proposal
  • Include reasoning and evidence for the proposal
  • Include suggestions and a formal ending

Examples

It was John who messed up the garden.
What I want is a big break.
It is the hardest thing that I have to do.

Practise
