Subjunctive Mood (Formal)
- Used to express wishes, suggestions or hypothetical situations
- Verb ‘to be’ in the past subjunctive – use ‘were’ for all subjects
- Present subjunctive – use base form of the verb – drop the -s for third person singular
- Negative subjunctive – use ‘not’ before the verb
Cleft Sentences
- Used to split a sentence to emphasise a specific part
- Structures – It is/was …., What ….
- E.g. It was me who finished the project. What we need is more time.
Write a proposal
- Include a formal greeting
- State the what and the purpose of the proposal
- Include reasoning and evidence for the proposal
- Include suggestions and a formal ending

It was John who messed up the garden.
What I want is a big break.
It is the hardest thing that I have to do.
